Answer: Protecting the car against the effects of the elements is very important in winter. The vehicle is exposed to increased wear and tear from cold, damp and road salt. Salt and brine are its natural enemies. They induce rust on the metal components, tarnish chrome and aluminium trimmings, turn plastics and rubber grey – and damage the paintwork’s surface. Hence the recommendation: Off to the car wash, and off with that dirt! However, any old, first stop car wash is probably not the solution. For a simple wash removes not only the dirt, it also partially takes off the protective wax layer. As a consequence, the paintwork emerges from the car wash less protected than before. This is not so bad in summer, but the typical winter dirt types are aggressive. A conventional hot or cold wax programme can only be partially recommended, as the protective effect wears off again within a short time.
