Environmental Policy

1. Subject

SONAX GmbH is aware of the ecological impact of its business activities and is committed to designing these processes and measures in an environmentally conscious and responsible manner. SONAX GmbH actively and continuously strives to reduce environmental impacts and improve its ecological footprint.

Our environmental management system forms the binding framework to ensure that processes, products, and decisions are aimed at avoiding and minimizing environmental burdens. The environmental guidelines underscore this clear commitment to environmental responsibility and transparently communicate our principles, goals, and measures both internally and externally.

2. Scope

The environmental guidelines apply to:

  • all employees of SONAX GmbH

  • all locations and facilities of SONAX GmbH

  • all relationships with business partners of SONAX GmbH

The environmental guidelines are directed at all internal and external stakeholders – employees, business partners, suppliers, customers, authorities, society, academia, as well as banks and insurance companies, and external service providers or business partners working for SONAX GmbH.

3. Objectives of Environmental Management

The understanding of effective and sustainable environmental management at SONAX GmbH, with the overarching goals of avoiding and reducing negative environmental impacts as well as the long-term improvement of the ecological footprint, is pursued company-wide through the following activities:

  • Through sustainable product developments and resource-efficient production processes, raw materials are used efficiently, waste is reduced, and environmental impact is minimized throughout the entire lifecycle of the products.

  • Employees, partners, and customers are actively involved in environmental management to create a shared awareness of sustainable action and environmental responsibility.

  • We communicate our goals appropriately to our internal and external stakeholders.

4. Principles of Environmental Management

Environmental management at SONAX GmbH is firmly embedded in the company's activities and is continually developed and expanded. The environmental management system and its associated activities comply with applicable German laws as well as relevant international laws and regulations.

The principles of environmental management are as follows:

  • SONAX GmbH plans environmental initiatives and strives for the most eco-friendly business operations possible. This also includes proactive emergency planning to minimize environmental risks and effectively manage potential incidents.

  • Environmental management is integrated into all business areas and actively involves employees and partners in the realization of environmental objectives. By fostering a shared environmental awareness, sustainable practices are exemplified and propagated at all levels of the company.

  • Decision-makers at SONAX GmbH make decisions regarding improving energy efficiency based on reliable data and drive continuous improvement through audits, feedback, and the early identification of risks and opportunities.

  • SONAX GmbH promotes employee responsibility through transparent communication, regular training sessions, and a work environment that encourages innovative ideas and the active involvement in process design.

5. Environmental Management

Environmental Protection in Production

  • Safety of our facilities and environmental protection are equally prioritized goals and must not be compromised for productivity advancements. For new production processes, we incorporate environmental protection requirements already during the development and testing phases.

  • Using appropriate techniques, we reduce or eliminate wastewater volumes and pollution.

  • We decrease waste, recycle valuable materials appropriately, and dispose of non-recyclable materials properly.

  • Harmful soil contamination is prevented on our premises.

  • We ensure manufacturing processes with low emissions are used, and unavoidable exhaust streams are cleaned according to the latest technology standards.

  • To protect employees and neighbors, we consistently monitor existing noise sources and mitigate them.

We aim to achieve the following goals:

  • Reduction of wastewater volume (m³) per ton of product by 20% by 2035

  • 80% recyclability of all packaging by 2035

  • Integration of 65% recycled content in our plastic packaging by 2040

  • Reduction of waste volume (t) per ton of product by 10% by 2035

Product Development and Resources

  • We actively manage the use of raw materials with the goal of minimizing our ecological footprint.

  • Development of a SONAX Raw Materials List, in which all raw materials used are evaluated for their environmental impact to meet legal and voluntary commitments.

  • We use raw materials and energy sparingly, thereby protecting the environment.

  • For new products, we consider environmental protection requirements already during the development and testing phases.

  • We continuously expand our knowledge of the environmental compatibility of established and newly developed products and take appropriate action accordingly.

We aim to achieve the following goals:

  • 100% elimination of microplastics in all active ingredients by 2035

  • Reduction of "Category 1" formulations from the SONAX Raw Materials List by 50% by 2035

  • Increase in the share of in-house formulations free of "Category 1 and 2" raw materials from the SONAX Raw Materials List to > 80% by 2035

  • 99% of all formulations to be SVHC-free (≥ 0.1%) by 2035

  • 100% of all products to be SVHC-free (≥ 0.1%) by 2035

  • 100% of formulations to be PFAS-free

6. Declaration of Commitment

Environmental Management is deeply embedded in the mindset and actions of SONAX GmbH and represents a central element of the company's strategy and culture. Our environmental success factors are based on the consistent alignment of all processes with our environmental principles, the active commitment of all stakeholders, and the promotion of a culture that supports innovation and continuous improvement.

These guidelines are reviewed annually by the HSSE management and the Sustainability Department, updated as needed, and approved during the strategic review meeting.
