This is what California smells like: the scent of Route 66 for your car

A travelogue for all the senses

Dawn breaks over Sin City. You’re sitting in a convertible with the top down as the sun slowly rises over Las Vegas. The cool morning air whips dust through your hair, whilst the radio plays riffs by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The engine purrs beneath you – pure freedom. The scent of worn leather mingles with the dry air and the promise of adventure. Then the Strip fades behind you as neon lights give way to the pale dawn.

Soon the mighty Hoover Dam comes into view – a concrete monument that tames the Colorado River. You step out and feel the warm surface, still retaining the heat of the desert sun. The soft hum of the turbines sounds like a hypnotic melody of energy and power. Here, on the edge of the desert, time seems to stand still – but soon the journey continues along historic Route 66, which lies gleaming before you in the morning light.

In Oatman, the braying of wild donkeys pierces the silent expanse of the desert. Curiously, they clatter their hooves on the cobblestones, as if trying to rouse the deserted streets – a scene straight out of an old Western film. From here on, cacti line your path – silvery spring chollas and colourfully blooming barrel cacti. The air tastes of hot sand and a tranquillity known only to the desert. Motorcycles roar past, accompanied by the scent of leather, hot rubber and boundless freedom.

Shortly afterwards, you reach Chambless, a ghost town where time has left its mark. Dilapidated houses and rusty tanks tell silent stories of days gone by. You hear the rustling of the wind, feel the dust and the old dreams that are still alive here.

As darkness falls, Roy’s Motel in Amboy flickers with its iconic neon sign – a pulsing heartbeat in the night. You check into the retro motel as the neon lights hum and the doors creak. Here, history lives on.

The next morning, the Amboy Crater rises before you – a dark colossus against the blue sky. As you hike, you breathe in dusty earth, rough lava and the pungent scent of cacti and creosote bushes. Every step crunches on the rough rock, whilst the endless expanse surrounds you.

The final few kilometres take you through Pasadena, where urban life pulsates. Downtown L.A. is waking up, and on Sunset Boulevard – the street of dreams – palm trees stretch their crowns towards the sky. Warm notes of asphalt mingle with cedarwood and petrol.

Finally, the Pacific Ocean opens up before you, and Santa Monica Pier beckons. The salty sea air mingles with the sweet scent of candyfloss and popcorn. The ‘End of the Trail’ sign stands proudly, surrounded by smiling faces and the gentle sound of the waves.

You take a deep breath and feel the heartbeat of Route 66. This is where your journey ends – and a new chapter begins.
