A travelogue for all the senses
The air is warm, suffused with the golden afternoon light that settles over the hills like a soft veil. You pause for a moment, take a deep breath, hear the distant murmur of the sea – and feel the laid-back atmosphere of Villasimius wash over you. For now, the world still seems to stand still. One last, peaceful breath before the Strada Provinciale 17 calls you back.

Before you lies the crescent-shaped bay of Punta Molentis, framed by bizarre rock formations. The sand is as white as icing sugar, and the water shimmers in every shade of blue, as if someone had poured a palette of colours across the sea.
Small stalls line the roadside – cobbled together from wood, tarpaulins and old planks, yet full of life. Baskets are piled high with freshly picked oranges, plump and sun-warmed. Their scent wafts into the car – sweet, intense, quintessentially Sardinian.

A few bends further on, you reach the Capo Carbonara lighthouse. High above, it towers over the sea, which merges with the sky here. The road winds along the coast, towards the low-hanging sun, which casts long shadows. The vegetation becomes sparser, the bends tighter – and then suddenly it lies before you: Spiaggia di Mari Pintau, the ‘Beach of the Painted Sea’. From above, the water looks like a watercolour – emerald, turquoise, deep blue. You stop, get out and feel the silence envelop you.

Just a few more bends. The engine is warmed up, the road is challenging you – so you spontaneously turn towards a small sign: In Our Garden Sardinia. A hidden spot, almost enchanted. You stroll amongst old orange trees, their branches hanging low. The scent of blossoms hangs in the air, sweet and promising, interspersed with the aroma of thyme and sage growing wild amongst the trees.

One last bend along the coast. You follow a narrow road down to the La Paillote panoramic bar. You roll gently over the gravel as you take in the sweeping view of the sparkling sea. The sun sinks towards the horizon, painting the sky in warm hues. Less than five minutes later, you’re holding a gin and tonic in your hand – with a twist of orange and a sprig of rosemary. Sardinian, of course. That’s the taste of Strada Provinciale 17.
